“MARANTA CONTINUE TO AMAZE ME EVERY TIME”HIDDEN DOOR FESTIVAL

Maranta are vocalists, multi-instrumentalists, songwriters and producers Callum Govan and Gloria Black. They were brought together in 2018 through friendship, a love for melodic, leftfield pop and dance music and a mission to make visceral, textured and infectious songs easily translated to the dancefloor.

Maranta released their debut single ‘Radiate’ in April 2019 – hailed as “song of the summer” by The Skinny it was later included on The Guardian’s best tracks of 2019 playlist. Their debut EP Care ii Cure followed in July of that year on Paradise Palms Records. Subsequent releases have included a track called ‘Thinking With The Heart’ on Paradise Palms’ Bonnie Tropical 4 compilation, a single with Leith label New Teeth titled ‘Miss Dupé’, and a remix of The Micro Band’s ‘Tried to Kick it But I Missed’.

The band made their Lost Map Records debut in December 2021, with the politically charged bittersweet disco banger ‘Stop Pretending’. This was followed up by the stand-alone single, ‘My Man’ - a shimmering analogue-synth-powered shock-pop bop all about “difficult things,” the band explain. “Suicide, comatose, sexual abuse, misogyny, rape culture, trauma. It’s also about forgiveness and hope.” A stunning video for the song, directed by Hermit Vega, funded by the PRS Foundation and filmed around the streets of Edinburgh at night, is available to watch and share now. All proceeds from Bandcamp sales of ‘My Man’ on its day of release, Valentine’s Day, will be donated to Rape Crisis Scotland.

Maranta’s music has been played by DJs and radio stations around the world, including Vic Galloway on BBC Scotland, Andrew Weatherall on NTS and Mario Cotto on KCRW. They have performed live at festivals and all-dayers across Scotland including Stag and Dagger, Tenement Trail, Hidden Door, the Kelburn Garden Party and Lost Map’s Strange Invitation and Christmas Humbug events.
