#HNY! HERE'S SOME NEW MUSIC BY ALABASTER DEPLUME
New year, new decade, new YOU! We're getting the twenny-twennies off to a flying start here at Lost Map with news of not just one but several new albums, starting with a fresh one from Alabaster dePlume – bandleader, composer, saxophonist, activist, orator and vibesmaster extraordinaire. Dry January? Not anymore because we just PISHED OUR PANTS with excitement. And we haven't even had a drink!
To Cy & Lee Instrumentals Vol. 1 is a collaboration between Lost Map, Chicago-based avant-jazz label International Anthem and the Total Refreshment Centre in London. It'll be released on 12” vinyl and via digital services on February 28, 2020 – and is preceded by the single ‘Whisky Story Time’ b/w ‘Song Of The Foundling’, which is released as a PostMap postcard as part of January's PostMap Club subscription service, and also available now on digital platforms. The follow-up to Alabaster’s critically-acclaimed 2018 album The Corner of a Sphere, the album draws together 11 different instrumental tracks, some old and some brand new, recorded over eight years in cities around the UK. It's titled in tribute to Cy Lewis and Lee ‘Shredder’ Bowman, whom Alabaster met while working for Ordinary Lifestyles, a charity in Manchester which supports people with disabilities to live in their own homes and enjoy fulfilling lives.
As an exercise in helping them learn to socialise better, Alabaster would devise and sing improvised vocal melodies with the two men, recording their impromptu sessions on his phone. He later began to use these scratch improvisations as templates for fully-realised recordings. “These tunes were not composed in response to the lives of my friends Cy and Lee," explains Alabaster, "they are products of the times we had, while supporting each other through difficulties, and learning from one-another, about courage, people, and life. They’re an impression of what we found was needed, to exist, and a celebration of communication that’s free from the demands of words.”
We're not crying, you're crying!

"Eigg eccentric journeys into outer space and virtual reality," "magic and sci-fi, beauty and horror", "sounds as though it’s being played on an ’80’s games console on the point of exploding" – not our words but the words of Uncut magazine, who have given Thumb World a tidy 8/10 rating in the first review of Pictish Trail's new album. We're not blushing, you're blushing!
Experience Pictish classics past and future as they are intended to be experienced – live and loud, while you're busted out of your chops on nasty cheap lager – as he opens his travels for 2020 with a show as part of the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow this Friday, January 17 at St Luke's, with support from Lost Map alumnus Rozi Plain. After that Pictish is off on his biggest ever UK headline tour, visiting some of the UK's finest towns and cities from Birmingham to Bristol, Dundee and "London".
