HOWLIN' FLING TICKETS, AND HOW TO BUY THEM
|
|
Yer ol' pal Lost Map Records turns 10 in 2023, and to celebrate we're having a party to end all parties* (*except for all the other parties, more parties TBA) on our spiritual and indeed actual home, the cosmic isle of Eigg, Scotland. Lost Map's flagship festival Howlin' Fling returns over the weekend of August 4-5, with süper-limited tickets set to go on general sale at midday this Saturday, April 15. Full line-up TBA at a later date, but expect the usual mix of label legends, guest stars, unrivalled good vibes and inexpensive if lukewarm cans, all in the intimate confines of the magical Eigg Community Hall
Worried you might miss out? Then sign-up to the PostMap Club now, because all members get first dibs on Howlin' Fling tickets a day ahead of general sale, on Friday, April 14. You can join the club now from just £3 a month – and (*whispers it*) cancel at any time. Even after just one month. Not that you'd do that, of course, because you'll be instantly gratified and amazed by everything the PostMap Club has to offer (see below for more infos). We're simply pointing out that, if you did decide to cancel straight away, we technically couldn't do anything about it. Other than serve you particularly lukewarm cans.
For full details, head over to the shiny new howlinfling.com website (which FYI we'll be using a ticket sales portal for all Lost Map events going forward).

GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT:
NEW MUSIC FROM MARTHA FFION
|
|
Classic, bitter-sweet, crisp and dry with a fine fair head, it's Ireland's greatest export. No not Guinness but Martha Ffion, ofc, who's back at long last with an absolute banger of a brand new album in The Wringer, which is set for release on Lost Map on very limited-edition vinyl on June 30, 2023. You can watch the video for the title track and lead single right now. Best enjoyed while sipping on a delicious can of popular Irish dry stout. Not that we, nor Claire (as Martha Ffion is known), are endorsing any specific stout brand in particular, because we're not in the habit of giving away free marketing (#guinness #spon).
The follow-up to 2020's wonderful Nights To Forget and Claire's third album altogether to date, The Wringer was recorded live and straight to tape with a full band at the Newry, Northern Ireland analogue studio of producer Julie McLarnon (The Vaselines, Brigid Mae Power, Barbarossa). It's a back-to-basics set of retro-modern pop in the 60s songbook vein, taking a raw and unfiltered look at love and how it cuts both ways. It reaffirms Martha Ffion as one of the most fluent songwriters of her generation.
“I wrote a lot on piano,” says Claire, of the songs on The Wringer. “My limited playing forced me to keep things simple. Lyrically, it was inspired by my reflections on who I am and what really matters: the people we love, how we love them and how they love us. The chaos of the past few years put a strain on lots of important relationships, and I experienced some of the uglier sides of love, but luckily came out the other side better off. I tried to write as honestly as I could, not hiding behind big conceptual themes or fictional characters: properly writing from the heart.”

FEBRUARY POSTMAP CLUB FEAT.
HAIRBAND + FIRESTATIONS
|
|
“A song about life,” say Hairband of ‘Extremities’, released as part of the PostMap Club in April. “We wrote this one at the speed of light compared to the others and felt it fit best as a conclusion. The lyrics tie in with the plow theme, and from conversations under the stars.” It's the closing track from the Glasgow/Berlin based five-piece's forthcoming debut album Under the Plow, which we're releasing on April 21 on really v. cool looking limited-edition sleek black cassette tape with printed lyric sheet, housed in an eco-friendly folded card shell with cover artwork by artist Alanna Hernandez. Have a wee sneaky listen to ‘Extremities’ on streaming services here.
April's PostMap Club funbag also marks the much anticipated return of London dream-pop ensemble stations, as nobody ever called Firestations. 'Undercover' is an effervescent song about depression and self-discovery, coming to streaming services later in the month. "It's easy to be your own worst enemy," says Mike from stations, sorry, Firestations, "by letting your routine save you, but also slowly destroy you. Where is the joy? (Asking for a friend). Come for the happy-sad lyrics, stay for the rare guitar solo!" It's the first taster of the band's thrilling brand new album Thick Terrain, their first in five years, which we'll tell you much more about v. soon, as well as announce some exciting Firestations live manoeuvres.

Also included in this month's PostMap Club:
Martha Ffion: 'The Wringer' – an elegant and heartfelt piano pop song for a companion in need, inspired by Carole King’s ‘You’ve Got A Friend’. The title track from Claire's forthcoming new album.

AMY MAY ELLIS GLOBAL TOUR*
*SORT OF
|
|
From humble beginnings in the North York Moors, Amy May Ellis has CONQUERED THE WORLD ™, in a manner of speaking. At a very special event in Glasgow next month on Wednesday, May 31 – as part of Lost Map's 10th birthday celebrations, which you may have heard us mention by now – Amy will headline Lost Map Under Gaia. A label showcase in the ornate surroundings of the Mackintosh Church at Queen’s Cross, taking place beneath a spectacular touring installation by the acclaimed artist Luke Jerram – a giant, seven-metre wide spherical replica of Planet Earth ™, named after the Greek primordial goddess Gaia, mythological personification of our great big big blue planet. Joining Amy on the bill will be Pictish Trail and L.T. Leif. Tickets on sale now.
Amy May Ellis will perform with a full band, as part of a tour exploring further reaches of the globe, or at least the UK, all the way from Bristol to Leeds and even farthest Farndale. See complete list of dates below (tickets for all shows here). It comes in the final run up to the release of Amy's absolutely mesmerising debut album Over Ling and Bell, on crispy good limited-edition eco-friendly 12” vinyl and digital platforms on May 12, 2023. An album hailed by Uncut in an 8/10 review as "elemental folk rooted in the Yorkshire moors", and by For The Rabbits as “a soundtrack for anyone looking to reconnect with the wild, a portable countryside retreat for anyone with an open mind, from the busiest city to the most rural spot imaginable,” and tbqh we couldn’t have put it better ourselves.
Fun fact: Amy's hair is very, very long (see above).
