FAITH ELIOTT'S NEW ALBUM DRYAS COMING SOON – STREAM AND SHARE 'SNOWGLOBE'
|
|
"You gotta have faith!" as Limp Bizkit once famously sang. Although they also once sang "dum ditty dum, where's it coming from?" and "bring on the dumpster funk!", so nobody ought to listen to them and their sh*te. The point being: faith, you gotta have it. And now Lost Map has got it, in the form of the fantastic, and to be clear not at all Limp Bizkit sounding, Faith Eliott. Welcome, Faith Eliott!
A haunting, atmopsheric, post-apocalyptic ballad that is the exact polar opposite of "dumpster funk", ‘snowglobe’ is the Lost Map debut single by Faith, who was born in Minneapolis and is now based in Scotland. Out now as part of Lost Map's PostMap Club subscription service in February as well as via streaming platforms, it's the first taste of the spellbinding music to be discovered on their forthcoming new album Dryas, a lush and mysterious trove of sound and poetry touching on everything and anything from hagfish to Pleistocene volcanoes, cursed memes and late-Renaissance apocryphal monsters lurking in the aisles of ASDA, all the usual normal stuff. It’s set for release on May 30, 2025, on limited-edition 12” pastel pink coloured vinyl, CD and via digital services and it demands to be revisited again and again. It's available to pre-order now.
About ‘snowglobe’ Faith writes:
“A song about fear of the big, destructive things that could occur and grief for the big, destructive things already occurring. There’s a nod there in the lyrics to TS Eliot’s ‘The Hollow Men’ with ‘death’s other kingdom’. The single cover art is based on an old illustration of the Wormwood Star, which is an apocalypse star in the Book of Revelation. Biblically accurate angel energy!”

COMING SOON: FIRESTATIONS' NEW ALBUM MANY WHITE HORSES – STREAM AND SHARE 'A WEIGHT STARTS TO LIFT'
|
|
In the previous edition of WayPoints, we teased some factually imprecise information about Firestations' forthcoming new album which lead singer/songwriter Mike took exception to, and has demanded that we retract under threat of legal action. So let us state for the record: Michael Cranny did not eat his bandmates while they were stranded on a deserted island. Sorry about that, Mike. The truth of it is that Mike merely buried his bandmates up to their necks, and left them there. They're still on the island now to the best of our knowledge, living off rainwater and crabs which they have become expert at catching with their teeth. Someone should probably check on them?
Whatever his bandmates' fate may be, this much is clear: Mike's gone it alone, for a bit, and made a solo album under the Firestations name. It's called Many White Horses, and contrary to the savage ruthlessness of events described above, it's really lovely and chilled out. Set for release on limited-edition 12” vinyl, CD and via digital services on April 25, 2025 and available to pre-order now, it's a collection of sea-soaked acoustic songs and instrumentals, interwoven with field recordings and lyrics drawn from the immediate surroundings of a sailing expedition around the west of Scotland, all brought together with warm, textured production. Firestations’ fourth full-length record was self-produced by Mike, who played a variety of instruments on it including a haunted piano. It’s enriched too by contributions from bandmate Laura Copsey, on flugelhorn, flute and vocals. Contributions made, we can only assume, before the spade came out.
About first single 'A Weight Starts To Lift', Mike says:
“I’ve been messing about with open-tuned fingerpicking for years, ever since I got into Nick Drake as a teenager, but I’ve hardly ever made it work for a song as I get too obsessed with getting the picking right and quickly lose focus. This time, somehow, I made it past my own gatekeeper and in the end wrote this song really quickly. It’s about the joy of having an adventure and not wanting it to end.”

FEBRUARY POSTMAP CLUB
FEAT. PAINTING + ALEXIA AVINA
|
|
You say: "AI?", Painting say: " AI, Absolutely!" We say: "has nobody seen Terminator II: Judgement Day when Skynet becomes self-aware at approximately 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29, 2007, and in a panic, humans try to pull the plug?" But everyone just ignores as usual so we go upstairs and anxiety eat all 18 bags of a Golden Wonder Transform-A-Snack Spicy Flavour Snacks 18x56g Large Sharing Pack™ while reading actor Michael Biehn's Wikipedia filmography, trying to figure out where it all went wrong.
But our good German friends Painting for one welcome our new robot overloads and FAIR ENOUGH, because in collaboration with Google’s AI LaMDA family of conversational large language models, they have created a song that is absolutely kraut-rockin' good, not to mention available now as part of Lost Map's PostMap Club subscription service in the month of February (as well as on streaming services now). It's taken from the fast-rising Berlin trio's incredible second album Snapshot Of Pure Attention. A breathlessly unpredictable collision of punk energy, math-rock time signatures, techno beats, free-jazz sax solos, blaring synthesisers and tumbling call-and-response vocals, which will be released on April 11, 2025 on limited-edition 12” vinyl and via digital services ( pre-order now). Assuming Skynet doesn't become self-aware first ofc, in which case "don't say we didn't warn you" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
In other news: Alexia Avina walks among us. Not in a Jesus™ type way but quite literally – our American friend walks among us, here in the United Kingdom, on tour (last seen having a nice seat in someone's garden in Oxford). Tonight ( Fri, Feb 21), Alexia supports the fan-tastic Brigid Mae Power in Newcastle, before moving on to Glasgow and Birkenhead for more dates w/ BMP, then returning to Scotland next week for a special LOST MAP TRIPLE-BANGER show at Leith Depot in Edinburgh on Wed, Feb 26 together w/ Faith Eliott + Victoria Hume ( tix on sale here). See below for all of Alexia's live dates. To mark this great moment in US-UK relations, we've put out two stunningly beautiful acoustic tracks from an unreleased Alexia Avina album as part of this month's PostMap Club. They are called 'Wonder' and 'There Is Space'. Is 'Wonder' a song about Golden Wonder Transform-A-Snack Spicy Flavour Snacks? You will have to head to an Alexia Avina show near you to find out (clue: no).
