NEW PICTISH TRAIL TRACK + "MYSTERY" GIG
We're lowering the flag to half-mast, dropping a respectful donk and sending this month's newsletter in mournful monochrome to mark the cancellation of the greatest antipodean soap opera ever to be transmitted twice daily lunchtimes and evenings at the peak of its popularity: Neighbours ( *cries*) . Rest in peace, ya mongrel. On which note, recalling that time when Madge's bumbling unit of a husband Harold Bishop was swept off the rocks only to resurface years later following a highly suspect bout of selective amnesia: 'It Came Back', the latest track to be previewed from Pictish Trail's forthcoming brand new album Island Family, released March 18, 2022 on limited-edition slime green vinyl, black vinyl, CD and digital platforms.
Something of a bumbling unit himself, Pictish describes 'It Came Back' – which variously features an arms-aloft falsetto chorus, a foreboding bass-driven electro hip hop instrumental and a brain-shattering industrial-metal meltdown – as "subconscious mental preparation for the unknown traumas to come.” So that's nice. There may or may not be a video for the track coming soon, which may or may not guest star a superstar comedian who may or may not go by the name of J*mes Ac*ster. But we wouldn't really know anything about that. Neither would we know anything about the "mystery" gig which Pictish is playing) at The Hug'n'Pint in Glasgow on Saturday, March 19 as a warm up for his two years delayed headline UK headline tour (full details below) I mean, why would we know anything about it, it's a mystery gig? Tickets on sale now.

ALABASTER DEPLUME IS GOING FOR GOLD
Informed, perhaps, by that episode of Neighbours (R.I.P) where Toadfish got drunk literally one time and decided he must be an alcoholic, or when Susan properly lamped Karl in his big stupid FACE, Alabaster dePlume is an artist acutely aware of the inherent fragility of the human condition. Take his new single 'Don't Forget You're Precious' for example – ther first single from Alabaster AKA Mancunian born, London based poet-performer Angus Fairbairn AKA Gus's forthcoming new album GOLD, a wonderfully uplifting rippling jazz meditation entreating us all to be kinder to ourselves if we can (even you, Toadie). It's released as part of the PostMap Club subscription service in February. A video, in which Gus is shot by children, is available to watch and share now.
In no way related to Going For Gold, the popular Olympics-styled Euro quiz hosted by affable Irishman Henry Kelly traditionally shown on BBC1 after the lunchtime broadcast of Neighbours (R.I.P), GOLD finds Alabaster dePlume really, um, going for it. Set for release on April 1, 2022 on double-disc vinyl, CD and on digital platforms by Chicago label International Anthem in partnership with yer old pals Lost Map and the Total Refreshment Centre in London, it's a tender record celebrating the spirit of being unconventional, consisting of 18 vocal and instrumental pieces that move between jazz, modern-classical and electronica. It's already received loads of lovely press including from Pitchfork, The Quietus and Mojo among other titles. Gus will tour the album around the world with festival dates everywhere from Knoxville, Tennessee to Berlin and End of the Road in Dorset (see below for full list of dates). He's doing a launch show in London at The Village Underground on May 1 (tickets here). A smokey, marble-swirl effect coloured vinyl version of GOLD called – *hits bong* – 'Obsidian Vortex' is available in the UK exclusively via the Lost Map webshop and Bandcamp page. Don't forget we're precious, too.

JANUARY POSTMAP CLUB FEAT. MARANTA
They're too young to remember the golden era of Neighbours (R.I.P), e.g. that extremely on-drugs episode where Bouncer the dog dreamed the whole thing including his own dog girlfriend, so we'll hurry up and get straight on with telling you all about Maranta's extremely excellent and powerful new track / video 'My Man'. Released as part of the PostMap Club subscription service in the month of February and available to stream and share on digital platforms now, ‘My Man’ is a shimmering analogue-synth-powered shock-pop bop all about “difficult things,” Maranta say. “Suicide, comatose, sexual abuse, misogyny, rape culture, trauma. It’s also about forgiveness and hope.” The stunning video, directed by Hermit Vega, funded by the PRS Foundation and filmed around the streets of Edinburgh at night, is available to watch and share now.
Also included in the February PostMap Club selection:
- Alabaster dePlume: 'Don't Forget You're Precious' (b/w 'The Sound Of My Feet On This Earth Is A Song To Your Spirit'). A warm, jazzy hug from our resident shamanic vibes man, taken from his forthcoming much-anticipated new double LP, GOLD.
- Jenny Moore: 'Marshmallow Root' (b/w 'Take It Down'). Atmospheric piano songs by Jenny Moore sans her Mystic Business, recorded at St Barnabas Church in Dalston, accompanied by a choir and violin. V v good!
