LOST MAP'S ISLE OF EIGG RESIDENCY SERIES
V I S I T ▲ T I O N S RETURNS w/ EMMA KUPA
|
|
"Back to life / back to reality," once sang pioneering British R&B band Soul II Soul after disembarking the ferry at Mallaig following a session on Eigg which sadly had to be aborted because Trevor "Jazzie B" Beresford just could not get his chonky boi 1980s PC to boot up. Luckily for us Emma Kupa, who operates a sleek and contemporary 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro TM, was on standby, and thus, Lost Map's Isle of Eigg residency series VISIT▲TIONS happily returns. The third series sees releases for the first time wrapped in at no extra cost with Lost Map’s PostMap Club subscription service! You're welcome! A limited-edition cassette of Emma's Eigg recordings comes out on June 17, and is available to pre-order now. You're also welcome!
VISIT▲TIONS is of course a multi-part collection of special limited-edition releases, made in rural seclusion in a “bothy” cabin on Lost Map's Hebridean home. Previous instalments have led to new music by Monoganon, Free Love, Slow Tree (feat. members of Sea Power) Arthur King (feat. Grandaddy’s Jason Lytle), Rachel Aggs from Sacred Paws and Rozi Plain. All the releases are available to discover and own now.
The first artist to be featured as part of series three is Emma Kupa, a singular voice in UK indie-pop for more than a decade, who has created seven blistering albums of good times and heartache, toured around the world, and supported the music of others through her work with the seminal Indietracks Festival, and Grrls Rock Camp. Following her beginnings with Sheffield’s power-trio thrill seekers Standard Fare, to her breezy collaborations with Hefner’s Darren Hayman in The Hayman Kupa Band, and presently the robust rock explorations of Mammoth Penguins, Emma came to release her captivating debut solo album, It Will Come Easier (Fika Recordings) between lockdowns, in September 2020. Traveling from her home of Ely, in the Fens of Cambridgeshire, to the Isle of Eigg in late-June of 2021, Emma created a mini-album of emotional lo-fi guitar-driven bothy ballads and whimsical croft-pop; songs that pine for a sense of belonging, the company of loved ones, and dreaming of another world.

SUSAN BEAR'S NEW SOLO ALBUM ALTER
|
|
Not since George Clinton & The Goombas covered 'Walk The Dinosaur' by Was (Not Was) for the soundtrack to 1993 video game adaptation classic Super Mario Bros ( "The worst thing I ever did" – Bob Hoskins), has there been another song loosely associated with the exploits of a certain pixellated Italian plumber which is as cool as Susan Bear's 'Mario Golf 2'. And many have tried. Watch an amazing video for the track illustrated and animated by Faith Eliott, edited by Bart Owl and starring neither George Clinton nor Bob Hoskins here.
Lo-fi queer pop producer Suse (FKA Good Dog) is a much respected and sought-after stalwart of the Scottish music scene and a lynchpin of Lost Map. You may recognise her from her work with artists including Tuff Love, Pictish Trail and Martha Ffion, as well as The Pastels, Tracyanne & Danny, Malcolm Middleton, Poster Paints, Karine Polwart and Amandah Wilkinson (Bossy Love) among others, whether as bassist and keyboardist, producer, songwriter, sound-designer, or something in between.
Available as a PostMap postcard single and via digital services now, ‘Mario Golf 2’ is a slow-building electronic pop song piling up stuttering drum loops, fuzz guitars and shimmering synths to a towering crescendo. Released as part of the PostMap Club in May, it's the second single to be previewed from Suse’s süper-dreamy forthcoming second solo album Alter, which will be released on June 10, 2022 on limited-edition vinyl and digital platforms. Played, recorded, produced and mixed entirely by Suse in her Glasgow studio, it's an album, says Suse, "about observing the past from a safe place in the present and trying to realise that sometimes change is okay".

JANUARY POSTMAP CLUB FEAT. GORDON MCINTYRE
|
|
Right at this moment we're really craving a Burger King Katsu Chilli Whopper® meal* with a 6pc. side-serving of "cheesy melty bites" (£1.49), all eaten off the top of a high street bin while wine drunk circa 9.39pm on a warm Wendesday night. But Gordon McIntyre's appetites are more sophisticated than ours. 'I Crave Rivers, I Crave Seas' is a rippling lo-fi electronic pop song pining for nature, escape and “adventure as a basic human right”. It's v. v. lovely and it's available now as part of the PostMap Club's monthly hot takeaway serving of Only The Best Tunes®.
Gordon McIntyre, for anyone who hasn't done their homework on him – and be aware that Gordon's a schoolteacher by day, so that's automatic detention for you sonny – has been a cult hero on the Edinburgh and Scottish underground music scene for more than 20 years. As singer and songwriter with Edinburgh indie-pop band Ballboy – who were much venerated by the late John Peel in the early 00s, featuring several times on his Festive Fifty charts and performing multiple sessions for his BBC Radio 1 show – Gordon has released four full length albums and a string of singles and EPs. In 2008 he co-created the critically-acclaimed Traverse Theatre Company production Midsummer [a play with songs] together with David Greig.
Gordon's debut solo album Even With The Support Of Others, which we're releasing on on eco-friendly vinyl and digital platforms on July 15, 2022 (pre-order now), grew out of a commission from Elizabeth Newman, artistic director of the Pitlochry Festival Theatre, after she asked Gordon to write some songs for their lockdown project Shades of Tay. “More specifically,” says Gordon, “it grew out of the conversation around this where we talked for a couple of hours about the natural world, natural landscapes, and internal landscapes. We talked about cities and countrysides and bridges and rivers. She asked for ‘as many songs as you see fit’ and so I sent her four and then continued to build the album around them.”
Also included in the May PostMap Club selection:
- Emma Kupa: VISIT▲TIONS 03 01 – Exclusive nine-track mini-album from Standard Fare and Mammoth Penguins lead singer, recorded at St Franny's Bothan on the Isle of Eigg.
- Susan Bear: 'Mario Golf 2' – Stuttering drum loops, fuzz guitars and shimmering synths abound on this hypnotic track, taken from the forthcoming LP, Alter.
*Supersized, naturally.
