If you've ever met Lost Map Records in our "happy place" – i.e. pants on head, drooling slightly, banging the table chanting "shots! shots! shots!" before being politely asked to leave Krazy Congo Soft Play™ because we're scaring the children – then you'll know this to be true: we love 2 party. So much so that we've just announced not just one but two (2) Christmas parties! In two (2) different cities, on two (2) different days, with two (2) different line-ups! There's only one (1) Lost Map! *bangs table* SHOTS! SHOTS! SHOTS!
Like it or not, Christmas is coming at you faster than a sackload of Santa-based testicle puns 🏻🏻, so why not book ahead now for one or both of our Lost Map's Xmas Humbug specials in Glasgow and/or Edinburgh, on Friday, December 16 and Saturday, December 17 respectively? The bills remain mostly under-wraps (some sneak peaks contained elsewhere in this newsletter), but we can assure you that there'll be performances by loads of Lost Map favourites and friends, as well as a few other surprises besides (not the sweet baby Jesus sorry appearance fee too high). If you fancy coming to both parties, know that there is a joint ticket for both nights, at a special price of just £30! U love 2 party.

BALLBOY'S CULT CLASSIC CLUB ANTHEMS 2001
– ON VINYL FOR THE FIRST TIME!
|
|
Legends of the John Peel sesh, ballboy are a cult indie-pop band from Edinburgh who were invited to perform five times on the late BBC broadcasting icon's Radio 1 show 2000-2004, as well as featured many times in his Festive Fifty chart. With their warm, whimsical and savagely witty speak-sung songs about bored sex, DIY drugs, civic shame and polar bears, ballboy helped to define a generation of fiercely independent Scottish music around the turn of the millennium.
As big fans of ballboy then as now, Lost Map are v. v. excited to work with the band on a special 21st anniversary reissue of Club Anthems 2001 , a rare compilation album gathering some of their most evocative and enduring work, as previously released on a trio of EPs. Available to pre-order now, it sees Club Anthems 2001 released on vinyl for the very first time, as a limited-edition double LP in saltire blue and white, packaged together with tracks from the EP All The Records On The Radio Are Shite (2002). The official album release date is January 13, 2023, but vinyl pre-orders will ship before Christmas.
The album is preceded by a double A-side single, ‘Donald In The Bushes With A Bag Of Glue’ b/w ‘Leave The Earth Behind You And Take A Walk Into The Sunshine’, released as part of Lost Map’s PostMap Club subscription service in November (and available to stream excusively via Bandcamp). ballboy will perform live at Lost Map’s Xmas Humbug all-dayer at Summerhall in Edinburgh on Saturday, December 17 as well as at the Lost Map 10 all-dayer as part of Celtic Connections at Oran Mor in Glasgow on Sunday, February 5. More on which below.

OCTOBER POSTMAP CLUB FEAT. FELL
|
|
BLOODY HELL, it's brand new music from Fell. A joyous harmonic-psychedelic pop song about living in the future while underachieving in the present (hard relate) ‘We Could Do Anything’ is released as part of the PostMap Club subscription service in October, as well as available via digital services now. It's the first track revealed from Fell's forthcoming new album Mallows Marsh, which is set for release as a CD with zine on December 2, 2022 as well as via digital platforms in January 2023 (pre-order now). Among other upcoming live performances (see full list below), Fell will play at both legs of Lost Map’s Xmas Humbug festive specials in Glasgow on December 16 and Edinburgh on December 17 – tickets on sale now.
Fell = London-based artist, illustrator, guitarist, singer and songwriter Nicolas Burrows, together with bassist Jon Rulton (Bear Driver, Dream Giant), drummer Dav Shiel (Beth Jeans-Houghton & The Hooves of Destiny) and keys player Matt Giraudeau (Dogtanion). They released their debut EP for Lost Map in 2018, produced by Dan Blackett (of Bella Union signings, Landshapes) and titled For The Pickling. It was followed by the sprawling home recording project Sides which saw Fell releases a string of six double A-side singles in 2020 and 2021.
Mallows Marsh is Fell’s second full-length album – an ambitious, patchwork record full of mood shifts, flicking about lyrically through Anglo-Saxon healing charms, pastoral horror, horticultural murder-ballads, mid-Brexit snapshots and ruminations on personal myth-making. Sonically it’s full of wobbly guitars and woozy organs, with chamber-pop arrangements giving way to krautrock, raga and drone-inspired passages. Imagine 70s west coast psychedelia woven into eccentric English pastoral pop. Think XTC meets Love and Gruff Rhys.
Also included in this month's PostMap Club:
The GN Band: 'I Don't Know Why I Try' – Thin Lizzy informed folk-rock from Welsh hearthrob George 'GN' Nicholls, on this standalone single, the follow up to 'It's Nuts'.
L.T. Leif: 'No Birds' – Brand-new single by Glasgow-based Canadian slow-felt swamp rocker. More on Leif after this short message from our sponsors...

GOOD GRIEF, it's new music from L.T. Leif. A softly swooping song about reality, desire and the glimmering possibility of a different future, ‘No Birds’ is the brand-new single by the Glasgow-based Canadian slow-felt swamp rock singer-songwriter, released as part of Lost Map’s PostMap Club subscription service in the month of October, as well as available to stream and share now. It's a first taste of their forthcoming full debut album for Lost Map, Come Back To Me, But Lightly – due for release January 27, 2023 in collaboration with Glasgow/Edinburgh-based independent artist led record label OK Pal Records. Pre-order now, and while you're at it, buy tix for our Xmas Humbug all-dayer in Edinburgh on Saturday, December 17 because Leif is pure playing at it.
An adopted member of the Scottish DIY music scene whose life and art has been heavily shaped by northern landscapes and climes, L.T. Leif is rooted in the self-sufficient spirit of the Canadian prairies, and carries with them the indelible experience of spells spent living in Iceland and Finland. Leif has been involved in many bands and projects, first entering the scene with Calgary orchestral pop sweethearts The Consonant C. Leif’s admirers include K Records maestro Calvin Johnson (they toured together with The Believer Magazine). Releases under the solo-with-friends moniker L.T. Leif have included the 2016 double album Shadow on the Brim / Rough Beasts and Leif’s first release on Lost Map Records, the 2022 Lost Cat limited edition cassette compilation of live and unreleased tracks, improvisations and deep cuts Introducing L.T. Leif.
Come Back To Me, But Lightly was demoed in a room on Glasgow’s Great Western Road and built intercontinentally with contributions both remote and in-person from pals near and far including Clea Anaïs, Bill Wells, Matt Swann, eagleowl’s Clarissa Cheong and Bart Owl, Faith Eliott and Mark Hamilton (Woodpigeon). It’s a magical collection of sensually sylvan songs all about, says Leif, “the body, loss as a decision, and knowing your own desire as a radical act"
