FREE LOVE'S NEW ALBUM INSIDE
|
|
Cosmic Scottish electronic pop duo Free Love are going INSIDE. No, not jail – although we have seen them do something illegal on at least one occasion – but inside (*hits bong*) your mind, with their consciousness-expanding and completely mesmerising new album, their first for yer old pals Lost Map Records. Released February 24, 2023 on vinyl and digital platforms ( pre-order now), INSIDE is 10 tracks of house-quaking acid pop, celestial drones and yogic devotionals that finds Free Love taking a trip into inner space, armed with some joss sticks, some synthesisers and big bag o' cans. Prepare for it to live rent free inside your crania. Try Free Love's pulsating brand new track 'Open The Door' on for size (watch the lyric video here) and you'll see what we mean. Is it in your head? Can you not get it out of your head? Like we say: INSIDE.
AKA Lewis and Suzi Cook, FKA Happy Meals, Free Love are paragons of the cross-pollinating Glasgow DIY scene, whose rapturous psychedelic odysseys have been emanating from the city since 2013 via esteemed labels including Night School and Optimo Music, earning them loads of critical acclaim and multiple award nominations. In 2018 Free Love released a limited-edition vinyl EP, written and recorded on the isle of Eigg as part of Lost Map’s V I S I T ▲ T I O N S residency programme – strengthening a long-standing kinship between the band and the label which has seen them perform live many times at Lost Map events on Eigg and elsewhere.
It leads to the release on Lost Map in 2023 of Free Love’s latest opus INSIDE. Written and recorded at the band’s Glasgow home studio Full Ashram Celestial Garden during and after the lockdowns of 2020-2021, and completed just before the birth of Lewis and Suzi’s son Echo in the summer of 2022, its a by-turns banging and blissed-out meditation on life and death, community and seclusion, worlds both outwith and within. It's a truly extraordinary album and we are THRILLED to be working with them on it.
Free Love also happen to be the greatest live band in this or (probably) any other galaxy; for proof come along to our Lost Map 10 all-dayer at Oran Mor in Glasgow on Sunday, February 5 (more tour dates for 2023 TBA) 🪐

The third and final artist to be featured as part of V I S I T ▲ T I O N S S03 is interdisciplinary artist Alliyah Enyo, whose contemplative longform drone opuses are vibey af. As well as being available now in digital format to PostMap Club members, Alliyah's Eigg session is also being released as a limited-edition cassette, which you can pre-order now either on its own are as part of a V I S I T ▲ T I O N S S03 triple tape bundle, also featuring sessions by Emma Kupa and Makeness.
Hailing from Leeds, and currently based in Edinburgh, Alliyah has been creating an immersive and unique sonic world centred around themes of femininity and mythology, incorporating sound installation, music composition and production, DJ sets, choreography, photography, and sculpture. Regularly transmitting through the capital’s eclectic independent radio station EHFM, and receiving Mix Of The Day from the esteemed Resident Advisor, Alliyah’s DJ mixes are truly global in scope; fusing ambient soundscapes, leftfield electronica and intercultural traditional music, with non-Western soul and R&B rhythms. In her live performances, she combines acoustic and electronic processes to create ethereal choral symphonies, manipulating her voice with tape loops and digital effects – often expanding her vision through collaboration with artists across other disciplines.
During her V I S I T ▲ T I O N S residency at St Franny's Bothan on Eigg, Alliyah recorded two meditative pieces, constructed around her celestial vocals, that each reflect the solitary nature of her experience. The track titles are literal English to Gaelic translations of the place names that inspired them – Cathedral Cave, and the Singing Sands – situated on opposite sides of Eigg. The first track is an emotive prayer, Alliyah’s voice layered and pitch-shifted to provide a sound bed upon which she delivers an isolated shivering incantation; the second is a more restorative exhalation, one that suggests healing, and acceptance. NOVEMBER POSTMAP CLUB FEAT. BALLBOY
|
|
Ever since seeing them live for the first time at some extremely dodgy nightclub next to Central Park football stadium in Cowdenbeath in 1999 (true story), we've been massive fans of ballboy, a cult indie-pop band from Edinburgh whose warm, whimsical and savagely witty speak-sung songs about bored sex, DIY drugs, civic shame and polar bears helped to define a generation of fiercely independent Scottish music around the turn of the millennium. Favourites of the late John Peel, they were invited them to perform five sessions for his BBC Radio 1 show 2000-2004 as well as featured multiple times in his Festive Fifty chart. There's an old photo of ballboy (above) doing a Peel Session back in the day.
We're excited, then, to be working with ballboy on a reissue of their cult classic compilation album Club Anthems 2001 – available to pre-order now – which will see the album released on vinyl for the very first time, as a limited-edition double EP in saltire blue and white, packaged together with tracks from the follow-up EP All The Records On The Radio Are Shite (2002). The official album release date is January 13, 2023, with vinyl pre-orders shipping before Christmas. The album is preceded by a double A-side single, ‘Donald In The Bushes With A Bag Of Glue’ b/w ‘Leave The Earth Behind You And Take A Walk Into The Sunshine’, released as part of the PostMap Club subscription service in November (as well as available to stream and share now). ballboy will perform live at Lost Map’s Xmas Humbug all-dayer at Summerhall in Edinburgh on Saturday, December 17 as well as at the Lost Map 10 all-dayer as part of Celtic Connections at Oran Mor in Glasgow on Sunday, February 5. More live shows will be announced soon.
