PRE-ORDER GLASGOW UNDERGROUND SUPERGROUP HAIRBAND'S DEBUT ALBUM
|
|
A hypnotically looping alt-pop song about “the call and response of co-existence, autonomy, and repair within relationships,” ‘Unconscious Rivals’ is the brand-new single by Glasgow and Berlin based five-piece Hairband. Released as part of yer old pals Lost Map’s PostMap Club subscription service, as part of a double A-side single together with the song ‘Surfacing’, it’s taken from Hairband’s forthcoming debut album, Under the Plow, which is due for release on limited-edition cassette and on digital services on April 21, 2023. Pre-order now!
Formed in 2016, Hairband are a Glasgow underground supergroup, featuring members of previous/current much-loved bands including Spinning Coin, Breakfast Muff, The Yawns, Lush Purr, Rocky Lorelei, Kaputt and Tarantula. Sephi and Rachel are from Toronto, Canada, while Simone, Rowan and Emma are from Glasgow, Dundee and Stirlingshire respectively. They met and became friends by going to gigs and playing on bills together in previous bands, before deciding to get together in a shared rehearsal space which eventually became their practice home. Following a relocation by Rachel to Berlin, the band has been operating long distance since 2019.
Hairband’s debut self-titled five-song EP was the first ever release by renowned Glasgow record shop Monorail Music in October 2018; live they band have shared bills with the likes of Sleaford Mods (who they opened for at Glasgow Barrowlands), The Raincoats, Brix and the Extricated, Terry and The Yummy Fur. In March 2020, in the nick of time pre-lockdown, Hairband recorded their 10-track debut album, Under the Plow, with Ronan Fay at Green Door Studios in Glasgow.
“These songs reflect a period the band will forever appreciate and be proud of,” writes Emma, “having stumbled on a particular kind of musical chemistry none of us had really felt before, and having had to fight hard to keep going through times of unrest both personally and globally. You can hear the fun and joy in equal measure, alongside more complex, darker aspects that we hope speak to some of the wider experiences of women.”

FREE LOVE WILL TAKE YOU HIGHER
|
|
The mighty Free Love made their long awaited live return at our Lost Map all-dayer at Oran Mor in Glasgow weekend before last and BY CHRIST IT WAS GOOD TO HAVE THEM BACK. This show had the lot – incense-burning statuesque human energy vessels, Suzi roaming the room tossing flowers, püüümping beats now with added live drumming from Paul Thomson (formerly of Franz Ferdinand). 10/10, would recommend.
If human energy vessels / flower tossing / incense can't get you excited for Free Love's forthcoming new album INSIDE – due for release on February 24, and available to pre-order now on exclusive pink vinyl – then instead please read some of the many Very Nice Things ™ the music media have been saying about the record so far. Including Electronic Sound magazine, who declared "all hail the new synthpop royalty”, or The Skinny who described Free Love as "Scotland's premier electronic synthpop and guided meditation duo" in a ★★★★ review, or Snack magazine who praised Lewis and Suzi for "expanding minds and filling dance floors with their psychedelic disco utopianism," or NARC magazine who called INSIDE a "pulsing acid-pop patchwork". The lovely Lauren Laverne meanwhile has given Free Love's 'Dans Le Noir' – a "zesty new jammer" say Clash – a bunch of repeat spins on her BBC Radio 6 music morning show. Thanks, Lauren! Thanks, everyone!
The verdict? Free Love and their new album INSIDE are/is very good and you should pre-order the record now. Not because we say you should – we say all kinds of daft things e.g. "hear us out: tuna nachos" – but because other people say you should. And they are almost never wrong.

FEBRUARY POSTMAP CLUB FEAT.
CLÉMENTINE MARCH + SDF
|
|
Like acid crunk, jazz noir, "tuna nachos" or that time when Craig McLachlan left Neighbours only to appear in Home and Away, the PostMap Club bag is nothing if not stuffed with surprises, contrasts, crossovers, contradictions and wild experimentation. Which other record label through their monthly postcard-based subscription service would be so bold as to deliver both at once, as we do in February, the chilled-out slo-mo waltz vibes of Clémentine March's 'Silence' – the video for which features Clem receiving a nice relaxing massage – and SDF's 'Broken Glass', an absolutely thümping electronic dance opus from a band who may or may not have done a lot of very powerful drugs? The answer is ofc: none other (record label).
Both Clémentine March and SDF as it happens have brand new EPs, and both of the above-mentioned tracks feature on them respectively. London-based French singer-songwriter Clem's My Empty Town EP, released digitally March 3, is a collection of four songs recorded between 2020 and 2022, showcasing the wide-open eclecticism of her craft, touching on everything from bossa nova to jungle beat and 90s alt-rock. She is currently touring all over the UK supporting our good pal Sweet Baboo – see full list of dates below.
Wild pop and improv disco trio SDF's Broken Glass EP is the follow-up to their immersive debut album 2022’s Rhythm of the Rubicon. The title track – an acid-dripping machine folk banger "ageing and thrill seeking and 21st century alienation" – features alongside three previously unreleased tracks, ‘Dinosaur’, ‘Playing Games With Equality’ and ‘Everybody Tells Me I Had A Good Time Last Night’. We had a good time last night too. Hear us out: tuna nachos.

COMING SOON: OVER LING AND BELL
BY AMY MAY ELLIS
|
|
In a world first (possibly, but probably not), we and everyone else at Summerhall in Edinburgh on Friday before last got to witness a live onstage unboxing by Amy May Ellis of her debut album Over Ling and Bell. It came after the first copies fresh from the pressing plant were delivered to Amy – care of yer old pals Lost Map – while she was in the middle of a show. Which may sound rude but she did ask. She seemed happy with the quality – would have been embarassing if she wasn't, wouldn't it? – and thus, we are on like King Kong for the release of this very fine collection of warm and delicate folk-leaning songs on limited-edition eco-friendly 12” vinyl on May 12. Pre-order now. All copies hand-delivered (possibly, but probably not).
Raised in a remote dale in the middle of the North York Moors, now based in Bristol, Amy's music is steeped in the history, culture, scenery, folklore, mysticism and wildlife of the wide-open countryside that surrounded and shaped her as a child. She made her debut for Lost Map last month with the beautiful single ‘Rain From The East’, a song about “feeling unsteady and the weariness that comes with grief”, formed in time with the shovelling of coal under a gathering storm. There'll be another taster of the mesmerising Over Ling and Bell as part of next month's PostMap Club. Some news on new tour dates coming soon too.

2) Order it now on limited-edition eco-friendly vinyl.
