SUSAN BEAR ANNOUNCES NEW SOLO ALBUM ALGORITHMIC MOOD MUSIC
Days when it cranks out an all-bangers all-the-time selection of hits by the likes of Sting, Morten Harket, Les Dawson, T'Pau, Cilla Black, Lethal Weapon (OST), The Three Tenors and Sting, it can feel like the Sp*tify algorithim knows you even better than your own therapist. Some days you wish the algorithm would just take you out for a Burger King™ and a good time. Some lonely days you find yourself wondering : is the algorithim single?
It's with these thoughts and more in mind that we warmly welcome Susan Bear's amazing forthcoming new album Algorithimic Mood Music, which we'll be releasing on June 28, 2024 on limited-edition 12" vinyl ( pre-order now). Preceded by the new single 'Drift', which is out this month as part of the PostMap Club subscription service as well as via digital platforms, it sees Suse move in a bold new electronic direction. It's an album all about " my relationship with music and making music,” says Suse.
Written and recorded over three years, Algorithimic Mood Music was totally self-made in Suse's home studio, like all of her music to date has been. The title is a sarcastic reference to the way so much music today is designed to satisfy streaming service algorithms, by rounding off all the rough edges, and reducing complex and messy human emotions to playlistable one-size-fits-all phoney feelings. “I was thinking a lot about human ‘mistakes’ and how much I like them in recordings, music and art," says Suse. "For my own solo work, I keep them in, because it makes me sound like me." Which is why we love you, Suse. And also why we love Cilla.

NEW AFTERLANDS TRACK FEAT. JILL LOREAN OUT NOW – ON TOUR TOGETHER IN JUNE
One early morning while gripping white-knuckled and ashen-faced to the deck rail of the Small Isles ferry fighting desperately not to throw up last night's Guinness into a heavy sea, we saw a great silvery grey shape rising majestically among the waves before disappearing again just as quickly. It was a big fat whale. Spirits raised by this extremely rare wildlife sighting, we procededed to drink x1 can of warm Tennents lager and our hangover was miraculously cured. Thanks, whale! Thanks, lager!
It's no longer the most beautiful whale-related thing to ever happen to us, though, because that accolade now belongs to 'Whale Song' by Afterlands. AKA Glasgow duo Rick Anthony (The Phantom Band / Rick Redbeard) and David McAulay (Strike the Colours). Out now as part of April's PostMap Club as well as via streaming services, it's taken from Afterlands' magical debut album We Are The Animals In The Night – which will be released on limited-edition 12" vinyl on May 10, 2024 (pre-order now). 'Whale Song' is one of two absolutely stop-you-in-your-tracks noirish piano duets to feature on the record, between Rick and Jill Lorean AKA Glasgow-based singer-songwriter Jill O’Sullivan (Sparrow & The Workshop). “It has a directness and naivety that I’m drawn to and there’s some obvious referencing of classic torch songs of the past," says Rick. "It feels like the opening chapter of a story. Jill coming in on this made all the difference – it was utterly transformed.”
You can hear Rick and Jill sing 'Whale Song' among other songs live in concert, when they play three shows in support of the album in June in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh. There'll be support from Rick Redbeard and Jill Lorean – see below for all the dates and details. There won't be any whales, but there will be lager.

APRIL POSTMAP CLUB
FEAT. SULKA
In September year we released the brand new album Distractions by Sulka AKA Glasgow-based songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and maestro of slanted DIY melodic rock Lukas Clasen. A departure from the DIY bedroom efforts of Lukas's previous releases, it was the first Sulka album to be recorded with a full live band and in collaboration with a producer, Chris McCrory, and it remains absolutely 100% rocking. Not to mention absolutely 100% available for sale on limited-edition vinyl via the Lost Map web shoppe dot com.
Now we're offering PostMap Club members the exclusive opportunity to enter the ~ P o s t M a p P o r t a l ~ to another dimension (of the website), and watch Lukas and band live in session. Recorded and filmed just 4 u, faithful PostMap members, at Organic Audio studios in Glasgow, it features four songs from Distractions, including 'Wild Horse' and 'Skyline'. There's also some talking about these songs among some other things. It's a really nicely made session and it will definitely make you like Sulka even more, even if you already like Sulka a lot, which if you've already heard Sulka's album Distractions you almost certainly do.
While you're in the ~ p o r t a l ~ , notice that you can also watch exclusive PostMap Club sessions by the likes of Courtney Marie Andrews, Martha Ffion and Kinbote. More brand new sessions are on the way soon from the likes of Afterlands and Victoria Hume – details TBA.
