Originally released in 2022 on the German label Antime, Painting Is Dead is a riotously unpredictable 38-minute kaleidescope of sounds which we simply cannot get enough of. You can hear much more about the making of the record in the latest episode of the Lost Map Podcast (contains Backstreet Boys). Our exclusive double CD re-issue comes with a bonus disc featuring three remixes by Susan Bear, Kinbote and Mildfire, plus a brand-new live album of songs from Painting Is Dead, recorded at Kantine am Berghain in Berlin. Consider it all a primer for brand new music from Painting, coming in 2025.
We're bringing Painting to the UK for the very first time next month, for some co-headline shows together with the also excellent Blind Yeo. They include a date at McChuills in Glasgow on Friday, December 13 which we draw special attention to not because it hasn't sold a whole lot of tickets yet but because we've just got a really great feeling about it and think it's going to be super fun night. NOVEMBER POSTMAP CLUB
FEAT. ALEXIA AVINA + AFTERLANDS

It was shortly after breaking into a top secret government research laboratory and being bitten by a radioactive hamster that something incredible happened to Alexia Avina (pictured). She quite simply could not stop making incredible music. Songs seemed to come to the New York City-based dream-pop luminary everywhere – in the bathtub, at the supermarket, on the subway, at the doctor's surgery (tetanus shot). Many of them were released on the Scottish record label Lost Map Records, including the albums Unearth (2020), A Little Older (2022) and In The Pantheon of Decay (2023). Others, such as her fantastic new EP zen and hot, she decided to self-release on limited-edition cassette, but with a couple of tracks – the shimmering, Blue Nile-esque ‘Perennial’ and the hazily raving ‘Zen and Hot’ – included in Lost Map's PostMap Club subscription service in the month of November. It's complicated, but then life's like that if you get bitten by a radioactive hamster 🐹 ☢️.
Afterlands are already beginning to give thought to a follow up to their Scottish Album of the Year Award nominated debut We Are The Animals In The Night. But before they do that they've decided to go back on one of the tracks from the record, with a beautifully reworked version of 'Leafcutters', freshly rechristened as 'Leafcutters Autumn 2024'. Released as part of this month's PostMap Club (b/w 'Ghosthouse') it features guests performances from vocalist Jill Lorean, drummer Joe Smillie (Modern Studies) and bassist Dave Fairclough. Reimagining the song in a lush full-band style, it's really very lovely/haunting. "It was recorded mostly live in the studio," says Afterlands' Davey McAulay. "We are excited about exploring what we can do with this group of musicians for the next record." |
