THANKS FOR HUMBUGGING!
A NOTE FROM PICTISH TRAIL
|
|
It’s taken me a few days to recharge my batteries, but I want to give a massive HUMBUG!-sized THANK YOU to everyone who joined us for our Xmas-flavoured hoolie in Edinburgh last weekend 🍬🎄
What a day! Hands down the best-sounding HUMBUG! we’ve ever had 🎶
I’ll admit, moving to a new venue is always a bit nerve-wracking, and stepping into the plush, theatre-y vibes of the Traverse for the first time, I wasn’t sure how it’d pan out. Spoiler alert: it was absolutely magic. Turns out the secret formula is pretty straightforward: INCREDIBLE MUSICIANS + LOVELY AUDIENCE x CHRISTMAS JUMPER = PURE JOY. (Also, bonus points for comfy seats. My legs were in bits after dashing up and down The Traverse’s many staircases about a million times. Current status: glutes strong enough to crack chestnuts 🥴)
Anyway, let’s not dwell on that festive imagery. Instead, let me shout out some well-deserved thanks:
• To engineers Alasdair and Gordon, for their absolutely chef’s kiss sound wizardry.
• To David (not Dave), Dave (not David), Rennie, Laura, and all the Traverse staff for hosting us with such care and professionalism.
• To Kate, Bart, Laura and all the Lost Map volunteer crew for helping on the door + merch desk.
Massive love to all the acts who made the day so special: Afterlands, Jill Lorean, Alabaster dePlume, Painting, Blind Yeo, Rozi Plain, Gordon McIntyre, Susan Bear and L.T. Leif with the Cozytown Collective. Oh, and me—especially the bit in my set where I casually discussed dead rabbits in front of a room full of children. (Sorry, no refunds).
Finally, a big, jolly THANK YOU to everyone who bought a ticket, and gave us all your yuletide cheer. We’ve already received so many nice messages from folks. You made it what it was: a properly brilliant day 💚✨🎅
Merry Xmas, I’m off to roast these freshly cracked chestnuts…

INTRODUCING: CURTIS MILES
|
|
A haunting, reverb-soaked ballad about adolescent trauma, ‘Easy Street’ is the new single by Cornwall-raised, Glasgow-based DIY country-folk singer-songwriter and fourth-generation pro baker (true story) Curtis Miles. Released as part of Lost Map’s PostMap Club subscription service in the month of December – backed with seasonal B-side ‘All I Want For Christmas’ (not a cover of the annoying Mariah song, but the lisping 1940s classic about toothless waifs) – it's available to stream and share on digital services now. The track is taken from Curtis’s entirely home-baked debut album What Could’ve Become Of, which is set for release on Lost Map on limited-edition CD and via digital services on January 17, 2025. Curt will play an album launch show at the Glad Café in Glasgow on Thursday, February 6 (with support from Snout and Boab). Will there be fresh bread? Who can say.
About ‘Easy Street’, Curt writes:
“A song about adolescence, and about my parents breaking up, me trying to figure out who I was. While something like that’s going on, you’re extremely upset, you’re angry. I remember acting very awkward, feeling very distracted. It’s just something that you constantly question. Like a few tracks on the album, this song was a sort of therapy for me.”

THE DECEMBER LOST MAP PODCAST
1) Johnny'n'Laura finally "got it together", to record this month's pod both at the same time. The results were predictably short and messy.
2) Feat new music from 'Fell' + 'Curtis Miles' + a Thrilling PostMap Club Update that you literally cannot afford to miss.
|
|
|
XMAS MERCH FOR ALL
1) "I don't want a lot for Xmas," warbled seasonal R'n'B pest Mariah Carey, but had she ever visited Lost Map dot com forward-slash shop?
2) Divas be clicking "add to cart" like cray cray when they see our junk.
3) Hats, vinyl records, T-shirts, cassettes, CDs, more hats but in different colours... we got it all.

DECEMBER POSTMAP CLUB
FEAT. PICTISH TRAIL + FELL
|
|
As anyone who has ever attended a concert by the popular recording artist Pictish Trail will no doubt attest, his performances are a very special, some might even say spiritual, experience. In which people with beards, or aspiring to have beards, stand/sit around in a state of emotional/erotical/follicle transcendence, watching a man with a beard, singing strange and beautiful songs in a uniquely bearded way. We've been asked many's a time to try and capture the experience in a video, which people can revisit again with the curtains drawn in the privacy of their own homes. While we have no desire to encourage your disgusting habits, included this month as part of Lost Map's PostMap Club monthly subscription service is exclusive access to a full filmed concert by P. Trail at Leith Cricket Club in Edinburgh, featuring softly reimagined versions of Pictish classics, accompanied by Semay Wu (cello), Gillian Fleetwood (harp) and Susan Bear (keys & bass). To view just grab the code from the latest club mailout and enter the Portal 😵💫. Should it whet your appetite for The Real Thing™, know that you can buy tickets now for an IRL Pictish encounter in Glasgow on Sunday, February 2 as part of the Celtic Connections festival.
Because nothing says Christmas quite like (*checks notes*) "the Nazis", the final gift in this month's Santa's sack of flamin' hot PostMap is the superb new song 'Black Triangle' by Fell, AKA London-based artist, illustrator, guitarist, singer and songwriter Nicolas Burrows (+ friends). An insistently synthy psych-rock tune inspired by a sinister story from the past (see below), it's the latest in a string of singles Fell have released in 2024 – including the equally as addictive ‘Lemonade' and ‘The Return’ – all of which will be gathered together as part of a physical release in Spring 2025 (more information to follow). Fell begin 2025 with a show in London, details below.
About ‘Black Triangle’, Nic writes:
“I was thinking about political ideologies and the visual language around that, and how people do awful things but still exist as quite ordinary people with ordinary lives. The Black Triangle was an identification patch used in Nazi Germany to designate ‘asocials’... I just kept coming back to that phrase, thinking about the people making and sewing on these patches. Musically it took a while to arrange, going through a few stages, but I always wanted it to be wonky. Then I got a synth and listened to loads of Kraftwerk and it sounds like this.”

Also included in this month's PostMap Club:
Curtis Miles – 'Easy Street' (b/w 'All I Want for Christmas')
Reverb soaked bluesy-ballad, taken from the forthcoming album What Could've Became Of (out in January, see above). Comes backed with a suitably festive country classic, with a mindblowing whistle solo.
