NATURALLY YOURS: NEW MUSIC FROM PICTISH TRAIL
Imagine taking your muddiest pair of post-festival socks, dipping them in bucket of filthy stinking mud on the banks of the River Mud, West Virginia, to the sound of extremely rubbish American rock band Puddle of Mudd. The filthiness you are currently imagining is not even a fraction as filthy as the intense fuzz bassline for Pictish Trail's brand new single 'Natural Successor'. It's just disgustingly filthy. Shower after listening.
Pictish AKA Johnny composed this honkin' dirty bassline and indeed the entire psychedelic opus – a first sample of a bunch of new material, coming soon – in a bothy on the isle of Eigg, as a kind of act of therapy. Therapy, not from being exposed to the extremely rubbish American rock band Puddle of Mudd (who have got nothing to do with anything here and sorry for even mentioning them), but from a bout of p*ndemic-related brain fog and writer's block. “The intention," says Johnny, "had been to write about connecting with my surroundings, feeling ‘at one’ with the island. I quickly discovered it was more about the desire to surrender to nature’s whim. I was imagining all the different natural disasters joining forces, and wreaking havoc on mankind. It was a cathartic experience playing a big dumb riff over and over again. Would recommend.”
You can experience Johnny's big, dumb, filthy, therapeutic riffing right now by streaming the mighty 'Natural Successor', and/or by pre-ordering a copy of the single on limited-edition 12" vinyl, which comes backed with a pair of exclusive remixes by Django Django and Makeness. Speaking of the Djangos, Pictish Trail will now sadly not be going on tour with them in the autumn because that tour has been cancelled . BUT, he will be playing live at the Hidden Door Festival in Edinburgh on Wednesday, September 15, ahead of a full honkin' dirty UK headline tour next spring supported by Savage Mansion. Full list of dates below. Would recommend.

AUGUST POSTMAP CLUB FEAT. HERBERT POWELL

|
We've come to imagine the internet as the all-seeing-eye of the digital age, capturing and immortalising our every public triumph and folly. But even the internet has its blind spots. For example, in the 2003 series of Big Brother, spectacularly boring contestant Scott Turner was evicted from the house in third place, and during his "best bits" interview with Davina in front of a prime time audience of millions live on Channel 4, was asked if he knew that he talked in his sleep. A pale expression of quite reasonable terror washed across his face, as they cut immediately to a subtitled VT clip in which the slumbering reality TV star, with a tone of deep pleasure, muttered these words: "mmmm, squatting over a mirror, checking out my b*mhole". Luckily for Scott, the internet records next to no trace of this incident. It's safely buried, somewhere deep inside Channel 4's b̶*̶m̶h̶o̶l̶e̶ archive. Unless anyone reading this happened to work for Channel 4? 🤙
We mention all of this because, like Scott's slumbering ass confession, the internet until recently recorded next to no trace of the mighty Herbert Powell, one of Scotland's greatest ever cult bands. Formed nearly a decade ago, the North Lanarkshire-formed art-rock anarchists played many a memorable, messy show on the Glasgow underground circuit, attracting a wildly enthusiastic following among like minded weirdos. Yet, no proper recordings of their music were released, before the band disappeared in mysterious circumstances. Now, thanks to yer old pals Lost Map, they're back – with their incredible debut single 'Once Powerful Uncle', which is available to stream and share now as well as released as part of the PostMap Club subscription service in September (b/w 'Velcro Dinner'). A debut album, Here In My Scheme, Here It Ends will follow in November – stay tuned for updates. Herbert Powell's drummer you may recognise as Romeo Taylor, whose solo hits include viral rave anthem ‘The Kingdom of Scotland’. If you'd like to hear more from Romeo and his bumh*ole, then follow him on the website twitter dot com, and/or listen to the new episode of the Lost Map Podcast.
