GET HIGH* WITH SDF
*LEGALLY
|
|
"Can't get high / without you" sings SDF's Oliver Marchant in what is either the world's latest love song to delicious dr*gs or the world's first love song to a step ladder. Either way, we don't judge. The first single from the wild pop and improv disco trio's forthcoming stunning new album Rhythm of the Rubicon – released on Lost Map on August 26, 2022, on CD and digital platforms – is the sound of your summer™. Burning down the acid house in futile pursuit of pleasure and escape, 'Can't Get High' is a tantalising mere four-minutes-long edit of what began life as a sprawling 45-minute epic jam. That's even longer than two episodes of Neighbours b2b w/ toilet break! It's available to stream and share now, as well as released as part of this month's PostMap Club subscription service. SDF will launch their album with a set at London’s Iklectik on Saturday, August 27.
Forged in the nightclubs of Newcastle and now based around the marshes of Northeast London, SDF are Adam Parkinson (AKA Dane Law), Oliver Marchant (AKA RKB Vitesse, whose single ‘Pledge Pyschodrama’ was released on Lost Map in 2021) and quantum physicist Lucy Whalley. Rhythm of the Rubicon, SDF’s third album to date, sees the group reunite after time spent on solo projects and other life matters.
“Myself, Adam and Lucy were in Margate recording what would become our forthcoming album and on our last night we went to see a gig," explains Oliver, of the story behind SDF's new single. "About midnight and slightly inebriated we decided to go back to the studio to try to make one last song and ‘Can’t Get High’ was what came out (there’s a 45-minute version from this knocking about…). Were we high? Who can say.
“The chorus line popped into my head after making a solo assault at pleasure at a festival once a few years back and it lodged there. The rest of the words came later, dealing in desire for a global panacea for the man-made problems that blight us, and the need for escape versus the near impossibility of escape in these saturated times. It’s probably also a love song.”

THE JULY LOST MAP PODCAST
1) In a move even more irresponsible than letting Romeo Taylor hold a baby, we made Pictish Trail record a podcast, stressed off his balls on the eve of Howlin' Fling. Turned out okay in the end, actually.
2) Feat. chats with Gordon McIntyre and SDF.

HOWLIN' FLUNG
1) Thanks to everyone who joined us on Eigg weekend before last for Howlin' Fling Presents: Pictish Trail's Island Family Gathering.
2) Contained ceilidh dancing, knee slides, crying, booze. Was v. v. good.
3) Keep your eyes peeled for post-HF "content", coming soon.

LOST WEDDING
1) Ever woken up in a seaside B'n'B, still in your trousers, with a Reid's "Buttery and Crumbly" Baked Treat™ wrapper stuck to your face?
2) Then you like us may have enjoyed the Crail nuptials of Claire "Martha Ffion" McKay and Craig "Savage Mansion" Angus.
3) Well done, Claire and Craig.

JANUARY POSTMAP CLUB FEAT. GORDON MCINTYRE
|
|
An incomplete list of things we have failed at, even with the support of others:
1) Driving tests (1999, 2000)
2) University (2000-2004)
3) "Relationships" (various, 1982-present)
4) Not urinating on self (various, 1982-present)
5) etc
But look, if there's one whoppingly impressive thing we have succeeded at with or without the support of others – and no we're not referring to that time when we ate an entire TGI Fridays "Boss Platter"™ sharing board all on our own in one sitting – then it's releasing the glorious debut solo album Even With The Support Of Others by Gordon McIntyre. As we shall do this Friday, July 15 on attractive and conscientious eco-friendly vinyl and digital platforms (pre-order now). Okay fine, so we admittedly haven't technically released it yet, and in theory there's still time for Gordon to back out – perhaps when he reads about the whole urinating thing – but we live in hope. All being well, Gordon will launch the album with a show at St Vincent's Chapel, Edinburgh on Friday, July 22 with support from our very own L.T. Leif, tickets on sale now.
As singer and songwriter with Edinburgh indie-pop band Ballboy – who were much venerated by the late John Peel in the early 00s, featuring several times on his Festive Fifty charts and performing multiple sessions for his BBC Radio 1 show – Gordon McIntyre has released four full length albums and a string of singles and EPs. In 2008 Gordon co-created the Traverse Theatre Company production Midsummer [a play with songs] together with David Greig. Following a critically acclaimed run in Edinburgh that year, it has since gone on to be performed around the world.
Even With The Support Of Others grew out of a commission from Elizabeth Newman, artistic director of the Pitlochry Festival Theatre, after she asked Gordon to write some songs for their lockdown project Shades of Tay. It's a bloody lovely album, and to prove it, we've sent out a special exclusive to members of the PostMap Club this month – a three-song video session by Gordon, filmed at the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh by Richie Morgan. Non-PostMap Club members, once they're done asking themselves why they're not PostMap Club members (great value, see below), can watch a song from the same session here as part of the Scotsman Sessions.

MARANTA'S NEW EP DEUX PLEASURE
+ LAUNCH SHOW
|
|
Deux Pleasure is the thrilling new EP by Edinburgh synth-pop duo Maranta, the title of which is not only a clever and sophisticated pun which we admittedly had to do some Googling to understand, but which also totally finally explains the name of the movie Hot Shots! Part Deux (1993) after all these years. Thanks, Maranta! The EP is released on September 30, 2022 on 12” vinyl and digital platforms. The lead single 'Our Love', a pleasure-seeking pearl in thrall to retro house and vintage Madonna, is available to stream and share now. Maranta will play live around Scotland during the summer and autumn, at dates including an EP launch show at The Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh on Wednesday, October 5 ( tickets on sale now).
Maranta are vocalists, multi-instrumentalists, songwriters and producers Callum Govan and Gloria Black. They were brought together in 2018 through friendship, a love for melodic, leftfield pop and dance music and a mission to make visceral, textured and infectious songs easily translated to the dancefloor.
About Maranta’s forthcoming EP, Callum writes:
“Deux Pleasure has been incubating over the past couple of years, a 20 or so minute collection that we are very proud to share with the world. The EP is as much about embracing hardship as it is about celebrating life. As people were forced into situations out with their control, separated or squeezed even closer together, we thought about all those pleasures that can be taken for granted, or so easily taken from us. The dynamics of human interactions under these conditions is the basis for most of the lyrical themes across the EP. We’ve tried to explore what pleasure means to us in this context, and when it is valid.”
