THE DEBUT ALBUM FROM AFTERLANDS IS AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER NOW

Nobody asked yer old pals Lost Map for a sh*tface drunk song featuring the honk of a live goose, but we released one anyway and guys, it's an absolute belter. Titled 'Geese Flying In Broken Patterns', it's the brand new track by Afterlands AKA Rick Anthony (The Phantom Band / Rick Redbeard) and David McAulay (Strike the Colours / From Scotland With Love), and it's taken from their incredible forthcoming debut album We Are The Animals In The Night, which will be released on limited-edition 12” vinyl and digital services on May 10, 2024. A jagged, driving song with a distinct air of hazy unsteadiness, it features shuddering drumming from Jonny Scott (Chvrches).
“Rick and I had often spoke about collaborating when we met for a drink,” recalls Davey, vaguely, of the making of ‘Geese Flying’. “This was me loosely recording ideas that I thought might kick start the process well before we did it. It was one of those parts that Rick and I both heard differently, the rhythm of it. We hear the downbeat in different places. That meant trying to record it 'properly never quite worked. So, we kept the original drunk performance in there which I think defined the whole woozy, feverish feel of the recording.”
“We were deep in first lockdown,” Rick adds, “and I think I was channelling some of that peculiar madness."
A more sober (hopefully) Afterlands will be making their live debut next week with a sold out show at Rio Community Centre in tropical Newport on Tay on Saturday, February 24, with more gigs planned around the release date of the album in June (including one in Aberdeen already announced, see below). Featuring a litany of esteemed guest performers from across the Scottish music scene (humans not geese), We Are The Animals In The Night is a really v. v. special record and we can't wait to share with you – more previews to follow soon. Pre-order now on LP/CD!

SAVAGE MANSION'S NEW ALBUM THE SHAKES IS OUT FRIDAY; UK TOUR STARTS IN EDINBURGH TOMORROW
|
|
February is finally here which can mean only one thing: the month of Savage Mansion. Let's call it Savage Monthon. Actually let's not call it that, it makes you sound like your tongue's been stung by a wasp.
In this month of Savage Mansion – on Friday, February 16 to be completely specific – the band Savage Mansion (pictured) will be releasing their much-anticipated and long-awaited fourth album The Shakes on 12" vinyl, CD and digital formats. We are vibrating with anticipation, because it's a really rocking good album featuring some of the best songs the band have ever written. They include title track 'The Shakes' (Flying Burrito Brothers meets Arthur Russell meets thicc bass), 'Present Tense' (goin' hard w/ Richard Thompson and the Velvet Underground) and our favourite 'Total Colombia' (song about Terminator 2: Judgement Day). We haven't as yet been able to reach Arnold Schwarzenegger for comment about The Shakes but if we did then he'd probably say something daft like "get to dah choppahhhh!" [Predator, 1987] or "see you at de parrrty Richhter!" [Total Recall, 1990], which wouldn't make much sense and might make you wonder if his tongue's been stung by a wasp.
If it's even more Savage Mansion that you seek, know that they are out on tour as of tomorrow (Thursday) starting in Edinburgh, before heading to other places both above and below the border including Aberdeen, York and Newcastle (see below for full list of dates, all with support from our very own Martha Ffion). For yet more Savage Mansion, you can hear them talking about ther new album (quite high) on the new Lost Map Podcast.

FEBRUARY POSTMAP CLUB
FEAT. SDF

If you, like us, enjoy music made for when you are – not to put too fine a point on it – absolutely f*cked, then you will 100% enjoy the banging new 11-minute opus by SDF. It's titled 'European Bar', and we're pretty confident that it's about being in a bar, in Europe. Which bar in which part of Europe, who can say. Possibly Amsterdam's House of Balls, Berlin's notorious toilet-themed drinkery Das Klo, Copenhagen's charming "Spunk Bar", or wherever it is that people wet their whistle in the Slovakian village of Horný Bar. Whichever the bar in question may be, a European bar's a European bar mes amis. And SDF are in it. F*cked.
"A mythic place," says Oliver Marchant, singer from SDF, about 'European Bar', which is released as part of the PostMap Club in February and available to stream now. "An occasionally occurring idealised dream state," Oliver continues, "a place where we can all come together and Be. You know it when you’re there. A fridge, a sound system, a state of mind. And there’s always a view, forward and back..." We have no idea what he's talking about and tbh we can barely even hear him because it's so loud in here but we're nodding excessively and keep saying things like "for real" and "yeah man, totally" and wait where are we how did we end up in Slovakia.
