BLIND YEO ANNOUNCE COMPILATION ALBUM; SHARE TITLE TRACK + VIDEO
|
|
What's the coolest thing you ever did with your dad? We knew a kid at school whose favourite weekend bonding experience with his father was buying knackered old used cars out the back of magazines for approx forty pounds then rallying them around a coal bing until they were smashed to bits. We can't beat that (nobody can beat that), but we can draw your attention to the fact that synth-player Henry Greenham plays in the south-west's most exciting new band Blind Yeo together with his dad, singer, songwriter and guitarist Will Greenham. Not quite "coal bing rally dad" level cool, but still v. cool.
Cornwall's most multi-talented, not to mention multi-member (8) and indeed multi-generational (2) Cornish cosmic folk collective have announced a brand new album, titled Echoes / Anam Cara. Set for release on limited-edition 12" vinyl on October 18, it's available to pre-order now. We're hestitating to call it Blind Yeo's "debut album proper" because it's a compilation comprising their two EPs released to date. But it's a revealing and exciting document of the band’s first two years together, and the thrilling journey of discovery they’ve been on so far. Get a taste by watching the trippy video for the track 'Anam Cara', which is out now as part of Lost Map's PostMap Club subscription service in the month of August.
“‘Anam cara’ means ‘soul friend’ in Gaelic,” says Will, who once had a fight in a carpark over a kick drum (see the Lost Map Podcast for more on that). “The human face is the window to the soul," Will continues. "Your soul friend can know more about you than you know about yourself. These connections can last seconds or a lifetime. Sometimes you have to say goodbye to that moment that will never happen again. We captured the song live in a turbulent and emotive time and in true Blind Yeo spirit you will never hear the song this way again.”

In our last newsletter we told you all about how we've begun a special collaboration with record store and creative studios Good Vibes in Leith, Edinburgh, which is now our "mainland base of operations" where we're selling all the Lost Map catalogue in one place IRL for the very first time (address and opening times above). Thanks to everyone who's been in to buy records and merch so far! Thanks for your lovely faces/chat/money!
We're also using Good Vibes as a space for hosting exclusive events and suchlike, the latest of which is coming up this Sunday, August 25 at 4pm in the generous form of Pictish Trail, performing a free intimate solo set. You heard him DJ at our last Good Vibes in-store in July, featuring Susan Bear. Now feel the full force of his very own hot songs, live and untamed, performed so close that you could reach out and touch him as he plays. But don't do that obvs, or at least not without prior consent.
Some of Johnny's hot songs will be from his upcoming new EP Follow Footsteps out September 13 (pre-order now), which is a selection of stripped-back versions of tracks from his previous album Island Family, done in a dreamy-sweet softly psychedelic style together with a trio of musicians on cello, harp, keys etc. You can be among the first to own an IRL 12" vinyl copy of the EP if you come to the in-store, because Johnny will have records to sell right there and then, direct to customer, no red tape just hard green cash (or card). Other stores around the UK will have copies soon too and they are as follows:
- Applestump Records, Nantwich
- Dreamhouse Records, London
- Good Vibes, Edinburgh
- Monorail, Glasgow
- Music From Big Blue, Glasgow
- Music's Not Dead, Bexhill-On-Sea
- Norman Records, Leeds
- Piccadilly Records, Manchester
- Raves From The Grave, Frome
- Resident, Brighton
- Rough Trade, London / Bristol / Nottingham
- Some Great Reward, Glasgow
- Thorne Records, Edinburgh
- Underground Solu'shn, Edinburgh
- VoxBox Records, Edinburgh

AUGUST POSTMAP CLUB
FEAT. FLO LINES + FELL
|
|
An atmospheric lo-fi pop song juxtaposing stillness with restlessness, ‘Funny Weather’ is the brand-new single by London-based musician and audio artist Flo Lines. Released as part of Lost Map’s Postmap Club subscription service in August, and available to stream and share via digital services now, it follows the release of Flo’s debut EP The only thing left is everything earlier this year, which received enthusiastic support from Deb Grant and Cerys Matthews on BBC 6 Music among others. It’s accompanied by a mesmerising single-shot video by Beth and Natasha Perkin (Deathtrashpictures), which isn't properly out in the world until tomorrow (Friday) but you can have an exclusive watch today (Thursday) because we're nice to you like that. “The video for ‘Funny Weather’ was inspired by a photo I took years ago," says Flo, "of a person with hair sprawled across their face on a calm day. There is something surreal about the stillness of the sea against the chaos of the wind. It felt like a moving picture and a feeling I wanted to capture.”
Joining Flo in this month's PostMap Club bag o' fun is a new one from prolific Lost Map long-timers Fell, AKA London-based artist, illustrator, guitarist, singer and songwriter Nicolas Burrows and friends. In a message for the latest episode of the Lost Map Podcast recorded in a hotel room in Beijing where Nick is "working" and not "on holiday" nor indeed "defecting", he explains that 'Lemonade' is a "surreal mishmash of stuff" collaged together from found lyrics and lines from old notebooks. Confusingly it isn't about the drink lemonade, but it would nevertheless be reasonable to describe the song as a fizzy, jangly serving of delicious pop best served chilled 😎

Blind Yeo – 'Anam Cara'
